Char-Houston girls upset McGuffey

Ashley Balzer and Addie Knetzer posted double-doubles, and the Chartiers-Houston girls basketball team upset McGuffey, 54-51, in a non-section girls basketball game Monday night.


Balzer had 11 points and 13 rebounds. Knetzer finished with the same, helping the Bucs (14-8) snap the Highlanders’ 16-game winning streak.


Tori Foster led Chartiers-Houston in scoring with 15 points.


McGuffey (19-2) got 18 points from Rachel Czulewicz and 13 from Sammie Weiss.


Chartiers-Houston won despite making just 12 of 37 free throws, including an eight-for-23 performance in the fourth quarter.


Burgettstown 52, Beth-Center 39: Kristen Roy had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Burgettstown girls basketball team to a 52-39 victory over visiting Beth-Center to finish Section 5-AA play. Paula Smith finished with 12 points, and Michaela Bertovich added eight for the Blue Devils, who finished the year at 2-10, 3-19.


Anna Bartman scored a game-high 21 points for Beth-Center, which finished 1-11, 3-18.


Fox Chapel 44, Peters Township 26: Erin Mathias scored 17 points to power Fox Chapel to a 44-26 victory over Peters Township in a non-section game.


Kayla Slovenec added nine points for FC (17-5), which led 22-13 at halftime. Madison Kerr paced Peters Township (3-19) with 14 points.


Serra 57, Fort Cherry 44: Serra outscored Fort Cherry, 21-12, over the final eight minutes to seal a 57-44 victory over Fort Cherry in a non-section game.


Leslie Hoye and Megan Sieg combined for 27 points for the Eagles (20-2). Jenna Lucas had 22 points for the Rangers (8-13), Rachel Bellhy had 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists and Tina Bellhy had seven rebounds.


Trinity 52, North Catholic 46: Lauren Simpson hit both ends of a one-and-one with 36 seconds to go to seal Trinity’s 52-46 victory over North Catholic in a non-section game.


Rachel Phillis tossed in a team-high 17 points for the Hillers (10-12), who won eight of their final 11 games. Simpson finished with 10 points.


Lauren Wolosic led all scorers with 25 points for North Catholic (13-9).


South Fayette 52, Canon-McMillan 45: Lauren Crites and Caitlin McLuckie combined for 29 points to send South Fayette to a 52-45 victory over Canon-McMillan in a non-section game.


Crites led the way with 16 points and McLuckie added 13 for the Lions (14-7), who held a 34-22 halftime lead.


Olivia Lorusso scored 16 points and Danielle Parker tossed in 13 for the Big Macs, who lost seven of their last nine.


Boys results

Mapletown 72, West Greene 18: Kevin Ridgley scored a game-high 28 points to lead Mapletown to a 72-18 victory over West Greene in a non-section game.


Dereck Riggleman added 17 points for the Maples (6-16), who led 31-9 at halftime. Eric Atwood had 11 rebounds and Dana White had 10.


Dustin Shough paced West Greene (0-20) with seven points.


Chartiers-Houston 88, Avella 53: Three players scored in double figures and Chartiers-Houston jumped out to a 33-10 lead over Avella after one quarter to take an 88-53 victory in a non-section game.


Alec Ferrari led the way for the Bucs (8-14) with 20 points and Dylan Pounds had 18. Kodie Hanley chipped in with 17 points, and Shayne Murphy dished out 14 assists.


Brandon Miller scored a game-high 25 points to pace the Eagles (3-18).


Fox Chapel 58, Peters Township 37: Peters Township played Fox Chapel without star Gabe Pritz, and it showed in a 58-37 loss in a non-section game.


Pritz was out with the flu and Fox Chapel took advantage with a 23-9 edge in the first quarter.


Matt D’Amico tossed in 17 points and Ryan Papich 12 for FC (16-6).


No player reached double figures for the Indians (8-14), who have lost four in a row.


Waynesburg 71, Southmoreland 62: Four Southmoreland players scored in double figures, but Adam Fox scored a game-high 26 points to lead Waynesburg to a 71-62 non-section win Monday night.


John Glenn Davis added 14 points and nine rebounds, while Dominick Sarra finished with 12 points and seven steals for Waynesburg (5-17).


Zack Block and Randy Ohler had 13 points for Southmoreland (0-21). Jake Porter contributed 12, and Justin Livengood scored 11.


Hempfield 77, Monessen 45: Javon Brown scored 14 points and Justice Rawlins added 13, but Monessen dropped a 77-45 decision at Hempfield in a non-section game Monday.


The Greyhounds (9-13) were behind 11 after the first quarter and trailed, 46-24, at halftime.


Kason Harrell scored 16 points for Hempfield (17-2). Arnie Cutreall and Tyler Handlan each had 13.
