Gov. Tom Corbett does not seem to mind denying health care coverage to 600,000 Pennsylvanians.
Fellow Republican governors Rick Snyder in Michigan and John Kasich in Ohio have decided it is a good deal for their states to accept the expansion of health care to the working poor. Even Gov. Rick Scott of Florida, a Tea Party favorite, has now decided that he cannot in good conscience deny the opportunity for health care to a million Floridians.
The good sense and conscience that has guided these other Republicans has not yet dawned on our governor. He seems to be focused on the political challenge of facing an anti-Obamacare opponent in the 2014 primary. This misguided political obsession has led him to deny our state billions of dollars of revenue, to forego the opportunity to have thousands of our fellow citizens covered with health insurance, and the chance to save hundreds of thousands of dollars in our overall health care costs.
The Medicaid expansion is a good deal for Pennsylvania, and it is the right thing to do. Gov. Corbett should follow the lead of his fellow Republican governors and say “yes.”
