LEVITTOWN (AP) — Authorities say a New Jersey man died after he apparently fell into a large vat of sugar at a suburban Philadelphia processing plant.
Bucks County Coroner Joseph Campbell told the Bucks County Courier Times that no one saw 50-year-old Janio Salinas Valerda of Edgewater, N.J., fall into the sugar hopper Monday at the CSC Sugar processing plant in Falls Township.
Campbell said he was last seen on top of the 15-foot-tall hopper trying to open a clog. When the problem persisted, a subcontractor was called and looked into a side access and discovered the victim’s body at about 2:30 p.m. Monday.
Campbell said the death appeared accidental. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.
