McMURRAY – Just months after enacting an ordinance that strictly regulates digital signs in Peters Township, members of council agreed Monday to look at the issue again, citing advances in technology.
Stacey Pape, of SP Floors in the former Ethan Allen building on Washington Road, asked council to consider an amendment to the ordinance that would allow multi-color digital signs with graphics. The ordinance now permits only digital signs using two colors – amber and red.
Pape showed council slides of various signs using only the permitted red or amber, followed by photographs of updated signs with graphics in a multitude of colors.
“Digital technolgy has come a long way,” Pape told council.
Councilman James Berquist said he felt council should revisit the ordinance, but stressed any changes should be consistent.
Councilman Robert Lewis has been vocal in the past in his resistance to digital displays, citing his dislike of signs advertising toilet paper, soft drinks and flu shots. Pape said, if approved, the sign in front of her business also would be used to promote community events. Lewis said others in the township had promised to display event notices. However, only a few actually promote community events. Lewis said consultants have noted that the commercial district is not “up to par” for an affluent community like Peters Township.
“The two most attractive buildings on Route 19 are for dead people,” Lewis said of the two funeral homes – Cremation and Funeral Services by Danielle Andy Belusko and Beinhauer’s.
In other business, Michael Silvestri, township manger, said he is in negotiations with Waste Management for a refund of garbage fees when the company failed to pick up trash during two weeks in December. Silvestri said the refund, the amount of which has not been agreed upon, could be about $6,200. Council will decide once the amount is finalized as to how to distribute the refund. Silvestri said about one fifth of the township was involved and would affected residents would be eligible for a refund of just $2 to $3 per household.
