Wellness unit adds two to staff
Southwest Regional Medical Center will host a meet and greet luncheon from noon to 2 p.m. March 7 in the second floor Guesman Room to welcome new psychiatrist Dr. Geith Shahoud, and Guiliana Mazza, a certified registered nurse practitioner.
Shahoud and Mazza join Dr. Richard Ajayi in the treatment of patients at the SRMC Center for Recovery and Wellness-inpatient and outpatient services. A light luncheon will be provided.
Shahoud received a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry and a certificate of general psychiatry from the University of Missouri and was residency trained at UPMC Shadyside. He serves as president of the medical staff at Southwood Psychiatric Hospital and also operates a private practice.
“I am pleased to be working to benefit the patients of Southwest Regional Medical Center,” said Shahoud. “Many of my patients are from this area and I am glad to partner to offer them outstanding and convenient care.
Mazza is trained in treating a broad range of acute and chronic mental health disorders. She will primarily be seeing patients at the outpatient center. A CRNP has completed graduate-level (master or doctorate) education and has passed a state board exam. Nurse practitioners treat both physical and mental conditions through comprehensive history taking, physical exams, and ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests. A CRNP can also diagnose a wide range of acute and chronic diseases and provide appropriate treatment for patients, including prescribing medications.
“I love to practice in this small community,” said Mazza. “Our goal is to identify and address the issues impeding a patient’s personal growth and happiness. I hope I can offer benefit for many who pass through our doors.”
The Center for Recovery and Wellness-inpatient services provide hospitalization services for adults 18 and older who are experiencing acute psychiatric problems. The 26-bed unit is discreetly located within the hospital to ensure privacy and confidentiality. Patients are admitted for many common concerns such as depression, bipolar illness, dementia and a variety of other psychiatric illnesses.
The Center for Recovery and Wellness-outpatient services treats adolescents, adults, geriatrics, families and couples in need of therapy and support. Some common issues may include personal conflict, depression, bipolar disorder, addictions and schizophrenia. The mission of the program is to improve the quality of life for each patient.
The treatment process may include:
• Psychiatric and medical evaluation and testing
• Individual and family therapy
• Group therapy
• Medication management
• Memory impairment assessment
• Clinical social work assessment
• Recreational therapy
• Discharge planning
Shahoud and Mazza join Dr. Richard Ajayi, medical director, who treats all psychiatric illnesses. Ajayi is board certified in addictions and has educational expertise in sleep medicine. He also treats patients admitted to Southwest Regional Medical Center and has experience with the administration of suboxone.
