Icy road causes seven-vehicle crash
Icy road conditions at the westbound McDonald exit of Route 22 led to a seven-vehicle pile-up at 12:45 a.m. Friday.
State police in Pittsburgh said there were minor injuries, but all of the motorists and their passengers were wearing seatbelts. However, police did not indicate if anyone was transported to a hospital.
The first accident occurred when Betty A. Dennis, 45 of New Cumberland, W.Va., lost control of her vehicle and struck the center barrier twice before coming to rest on the left shoulder. Dennis and her passenger, Tessa Bragg, 17, also of New Cumberland, received minor injuries.
Behind them, a vehicle operated by Christine J. Shalley, 37, of Moon Township, attempted to avoid the accident but lost control. Shalley’s vehicle struck the right concrete barrier, spun around and came to rest in the left lane. She and her passengers, Casey DiFabbio, 28, and Andraleigh Boden, 19, both of Weirton, W.Va., all had minor injuries.
Also slightly injured was the driver of the next vehicle, David James Hammer, 30, of Steubenville, Ohio, who, observing the accident in front of him, tapped his brakes but lost control with his vehicle rolling up an incline barrier.
Then Dominic Carpini, 62, of Follansbee, W.Va., was unable to stop his vehicle and struck the rear of a Lincoln Navigator that had stopped on the road due to the accidents in front. The male driver of the Lincoln Navigator fled the scene without providing any information, police said.
Last, a tractor-trailer operated by Yuniet Machado, 33, of Linden, N.J., was unable to stop due and struck the rear of a truck operated by Oscar Lopez, 38, of Tilton, Ill., which was stopped on the right shoulder. Also riding in the Lopez truck was Joshua B. Cooprider, 30, also of Tilton.
