Consol’s Blacksville No. 2 mine evacuated
The Mine Safety and Health Administration says all employees are accounted for after the evacuation of Consol Energy’s Blacksville No. 2 Mine about 2 p.m. today.
A spokeswoman for MSHA said a fire is believed to be the source of smoke that was detected exiting the Orndoff Shaft in Wayne Township, Greene County. Mine rescue personnel entered the mine to investigate but were forced back by heat.
The mine was evacuated through the Kuhntown portal, according to Lynn Seay, Consol spokeswoman. Consol informed afternoon shift personnel at Blacksville No. 2 that work for that shift was canceled.
Coal reserves in the Pittsburgh Seam at the Blacksville No. 2 Mine straddle the West Virginia-Pennsylvania border. Consol built a portal to the mine in Greene County.
