South Fayette girls take third
The South Fayette girls finished with 119 points to place third at the PIAA Class AA swim and dive championships yesterday at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.
Villa Maria won the Class AA team title with 237 points, and the Lions, fresh off their first-ever WPIAL championship, were six points out of second behind York Suburban.
It was the best finish in program history, eclipsing last year’s ninth-place finish at states.
“A lot of things had to fall right because there are a lot of teams that were real close,” South Fayette coach Matt Tucker said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the girls.”
Mary Rosati placed 10th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5 minutes, 5.50 seconds.
Despite finishing nearly two seconds below her seed time to take eighth in the 100 breastroke at 1:07.05, Morgan Fink rebounded nicely to swim a 52-second leg on the Lions’ 400 freestyle relay team that finished third in 3:36.53.
“She came back really well,” Tucker said. “Even though it was a little bit of a disappointment, she kept it together for the team and gave her best effort.”
South Fayette diver Stephen Zombek was 14th with a score of 324.40. Charleroi’s Luke Simpson took 13th in the 100 backstroke in 54.93.
The Class AAA portion of the meet begins today.
