Bishop McGuinness tops River Mill 57-52 for title
Julia Brown had 17 points and 14 rebounds, leading Bishop McGuinness to a record eighth consecutive Class 1-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association women's championship with a 57-52 victory over River Mill Saturday.Brown was 7 of 17 from the field and had five offensive rebounds as Bishop McGuinness rallied from an 11-point deficit with 5:50 left to play to keep their state title streak alive.Bishop McGuinness (25-7) outscored River Mill 20-7 in the final quarter.Cameron Nieters had 12 points and seven rebounds and Tia Cappuccio added 12 points and three assists. Olivia Defrancesco chipped in with nine points and six assists for Bishop McGuinness.River Mill Academy (28-4) was led by Lenaira Ruffin's 17 points and 15 rebounds. Kayla Burns had nine points and Marla Crawford added eight.Bishop McGuinness held a 49-37 edge on the boards, helping to offset their 17 turnovers in the game.
