A tractor-trailer traveling on Interstate 79 in Greene County, about a mile north of the West Virginia state line, flipped Sunday morning, killing an Ohio man who was trapped inside the rig.
Franklin E. Jeffers, 61, of Bethesda, was pronounced dead at 9:45 a.m. by Greene County Coroner Greg Rohanna. Rohanna was called to the accident at 8:35 a.m.
According to a report from the coroner’s office, the accident occurred when the tractor-trailer was traveling southbound and left the road on the west side, striking guardrails and turning onto its top and side. The tractor-trailer was a tanker truck, and the tank’s contents, the report said, were leaking. Hazardous materials and Greene County Emergency Management teams were called to assist.
State police are continuing to investigate. Also assisting were Mt. Morris Fire Department, EMS Southwest and the Department of Environmental Protection.
