Beth-Center teacher awaiting sentencing on sex crimes resigns

DEEMSTON – A Bethlehem-Center School District teacher has resigned after pleading guilty to having sex with a 15-year-old girl he was directing in a spring musical in a different high school.

The Beth-Center School Board Monday unanimously accepted the resignation of Jeffrey A. Hahn, 24, of Bethel Park, who submitted his letter of resignation before he was about to be fired from his teaching post, district officials said.

Hahn submitted an open guilty plea Dec. 18 before Washington County Judge John DiSalle to involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, institutional sexual assault of a minor, indecent assault on a child, statutory sexual assault and corruption of minors, court records show. DiSalle ordered an assessment of Hahn by the Pennsylvania Sexual Offenders Assessment Board to determine if he meets the criteria of a sexually violent predator before sentencing him April 16, court records show.

Charleroi Regional police arrested Hahn in July over allegations he had sex with the girl while directing a play at Charleroi Area Junior-Senior High School. Police said the two had pledged their love for each other in March 2011 about the time the sex act took place in the basement of that school’s auditorium.

His teaching certificate since has been revoked by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Beth-Center board President Karen Drill said Hahn expressed regret for his actions and apologized to the school district in his letter of resignation.

His plea agreement calls for a sentence of 4 to 8 years in prison. He is free on $100,000 bond under orders to not have contact with children unless they are relatives and he has adult supervision, court records show.
