Chris Bando has resigned as manager of the Washington Wild Things less than two months before the Frontier League team’s season opener.

Bando, who played nine seasons as a catcher in the major leagues, spent one season with Washington and guided the Wild Things to a 44-52 record and sixth-place finish in the East Division. Bando cited health reasons – he recently had hip replacement surgery – as his reason for resigning.

The Wild Things promoted Bart Zeller to manager for the 2013 season. The 71-year-old Zeller was hired as a coach by the Wild Things during the offseason after spending two years as manager of the Joliet Slammers. He led the Slammers to the Frontier League championship in 2011.
