Washington convenience store clerk shot
A clerk at an East Maiden Street convenience store in Washington was shot in the lower leg by two robbers who rushed the store about 4:30 a.m. today, city police said.
The 51-year-old man was standing behind the cash register at the Uni-Mart when two robbers rushed into the store and jumped up on the counter, said city police Lt. Dan Stanek. A second clerk, a 37-year-old man, also was assaulted by the robbers.
Stanek said the robbers are believed to be two younger men. No other description was available because Stanek said they were “covered from head to toe.”
“What was unusual was how they rushed the store and overtook the clerks,” Stanek said. “Usually they don’t shoot unless they have to.”
Stanek said it appears on surveillance video that they might have attempted to fire a second shot from the small-caliber handgun on the way out of the store, but the gun misfired or jammed. The robbers got away with an undetermined amount of cash.
The clerk was taken to Washington Hospital for treatment. Stanek was not certain if he was then transferred to a Pittsburgh hospital.
Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call Stanek at 724-223-1386.
