Father, son charged in sexual assaults
James Earl Maskil Jr., left, and his son, James Keith Maskil, are charged with sexual assaults on a girl that allegedly began when she was 7.
A Washington father and son were arrested Thursday on charges they sexually assaulted a young girl over a period of more than six years.
James Earl Maskil Jr., 43, of 730 Broad St., and James Keith Maskil, 19, of 455 Broad, were taken into custody by Washington police on warrants issued earlier in the week by District Judge Robert Redlinger.
The assaults allegedly began in 2005 when the girl was 7, said city police Detective Dan Rush, who filed the charges against the pair.
The girl reported to officials at Washington High School that she had been a victim of rape and indecent assault. The assaults allegedly took place at several residences in the city.
Washington County Children and Youth Services and Rush conducted an investigation.
According to investigators, the girl said she had told the elder Maskil that his son had raped her and performed sex acts on her. James Earl Maskil reportedly told the girl he would “take care of it.”
The elder Maskil later asked the girl for details and then forced her to perform similar acts with him, the girl alleged. When the girl would protest, he would threaten to punish her or claim she was lying, police said.
Authorities allege the younger Maskil first sexually assaulted the girl when she was 7 and he was 12. The assaults reportedly began in 2005 when he tried to have sex with the girl, and police say the first time he was successful in raping her was in front of one of the girl’s siblings.
The girl told investigators she attempted to avoid being alone with the elder Maskil. She also said she was afraid to report the assaults because she believed it would take too long for something to be done.
Rush said the investigation is continuing, and he is looking at other suspects.
Both men were arraigned before Redlinger. The elder Maskil is charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, indecent assault of a person less than 13, corruption of minors and endangering the welfare of children. His son is charged with three counts of rape of a child and one count of indecent assault. Each is in the Washington County jail on $50,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Wednesday in Central Court.
