A 56-year-old woman lost her life in a one-car accident Monday night when her car veered off a Washington street and struck an apartment building.

The woman, whom police declined to identify pending notification of her family, was prounounced dead at Washington Hospital shortly after 9 p.m.

Patrolman Dan Grossman, who is investigating the accident, said the woman may have suffered some type of medical emergency prior to veering off West Chestnut Street. He said tests would be performed at the hospital to help determine what caused her to crash.

The red, four-door compact car struck the building at 391 W. Chestnut across the street from Mm Mm Pizza.

James Retchless, of 397 W. Chestnut, saw the car careering down the hill at a high speed and then suddenly turn to the left and crash into the building next door.

He said it appeared that the woman’s head struck the windshield when she crashed. However, when police were inspecting the vehicle after the woman had been extricated, its deployed airbag was visible.

Georgeanne Farkus, whose home is next door to the building that was struck, said this is the second time a vehicle has wrecked in her driveway. Farkus was returning home from a Washington Council meeting but had first made a quick stop at the Goodwill store, otherwise she said she could have been in her driveway at the time.

“The first thing I did was say a prayer for her,” she said.
