Dodgers place Lilly on DL, activate Kershaw
The Los Angeles Dodgers placed left-hander Ted Lilly on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a strain in his right rib cage and activated starter Clayton Kershaw from the bereavement list to start the opener of a weekend series against the San Francisco Giants.Kershaw's outing is on turn and regular rest after he was away from the club this week following the death of his father last Sunday."We'll see how it goes tonight, obviously he wanted to pitch," manager Don Mattingly said. "We look forward to it. Always with Clayton, you feel like you've got a pretty good shot. Usually with him, nothing really bothers him mentally. But obviously this is not just any old situation, like having a bad game or something. The biggest thing for Clayton is when he gets out of his routine."Lilly (0-1, 5.63 ERA) underwent MRI exams on his neck and rib cage Monday and received an injection in the rib cage. He lasted only three innings in Monday's home loss to the Rockies, allowing five runs, four earned, and eight hits.Lilly isn't going to guess when he might be ready to get back on the mound, but doesn't plan to rush it or be a detriment to the team."I'm going to try to get through it but if I can't I have to ask myself if I'm hurting the team," he said. "Obviously I want to get back as soon as I can but I need to get to the point where it's not going to be an issue."Also Friday, Dodgers first baseman and cleanup hitter Adrian Gonzalez was a late scratch because of neck pain. He collided with the umpire on Wednesday.Carl Crawford is nursing tightness in his right hamstring and missed his second straight game after being scratched Tuesday night against the Rockies.Second baseman Mark Ellis missed his sixth straight game since leaving last Friday's game against Milwaukee with a strained right quadriceps muscle after running out a grounder to the pitcher in the sixth. If he hasn't improved enough by Monday, Mattingly said the Dodgers would consider a DL stint since it could be backdated to his last game and they could add a healthy player.
