SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – The Schaumburg Boomers made the most of only five hits and defeated the Wild Things, 2-1, Sunday to complete a sweep of the season-opening three-game series.

Schaumburg won all three games by one run.

The Boomers took advantage of their limited offense to score single runs in the third and fifth innings against Washington starter Shawn Blackwell. The Boomers drew a leadoff walk in each of those innings.

In the third, a walk set up Frank Pfister’s run-scoring single. In the fifth, Craig Hertler walked, stole second base and scored on Gerard Hall’s double.

Washington tied the score at 1-1 in the fourth when Jovan Rosa and Mark Samuelson hit consecutive doubles. The Wild Things outhit the Boomers 9-5, but Washington was only 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners on base. Rosa and Matt Fleishman each had two hits for the Wild Things.

Blackwell gave up three hits and three walks in six innings. Anthony Collazo pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Schaumburg’s bullpen produced four shutout innings in relief of starter Joe Parsons (1-0).

The Wild Things resume their six-game road trip to open the season Tuesday night at Rockford. Washington’s home opener is Friday night against defending league champion Southern Illinois.
