Central Greene hires Uplinger as superintedent
WAYNESBURG – Central Greene School Board hired a new superintendent Tuesday to replace Dr. Jerome Bartley, who retired at the start of the year.
The board voted to hire Brian T. Uplinger, now superintendent of Pine Grove Area School District in Schuylkill County, under a five-year contract with a starting salary of $122,500. He will start July 1.
Board President Eleanor Chapman said after the meeting the board had been in the process of selecting Bartley’s replacement for several months. Nine candidates were interviewed for the position.
“We think he (Uplinger) will be a good fit for this district,” she said.
Uplinger did not attend the meeting. According to an information sheet prepared on his background, Uplinger has been superintendent of Pine Grove Area since 2010.
Pine Grove Area is described on its website as a rural district with an industry base of farming, manufacturing and coal mining. The district has about 1,600 students, slightly less than the about 2,000 students in Central Greene.
Prior to becoming superintendent at Pine Grove Area, Uplinger served as assistant superintendent for two years in Northwestern Lehigh School District. He also was employed as a principal, assistant principal, dean of students and elementary teacher.
Uplinger has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Penn State University and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Lock Haven University.
The motion to hire Uplinger was approved in a 6-1 vote. Board member Kevin Barnhart voted against the motion and board members John Bristor and Joanne Brookover were absent.
Bartley had given the board his notice of retirement in November, citing medical necessity and family obligations. His retirement was effective Jan. 1. Since then, Matthew Blair, the district’s technology and cyber school coordinator, has served as acting superintendent.
In other business, the board agreed to hold a special meeting Tuesday for general purposes, including the adoption of the district’s 2013-14 budget.
The board received notification of the tentative retirement of Joyce Morich, middle school guidance counselor, at the end of the 2013-14 school year; and accepted the resignation of John Mark Kuhn, middle school art teacher.
The board also approved a letter of resignation for retirement of Martha Minor, high school secretary, after 26 years of service, effective July 31.
The board approved the following transfers: Brenna Cipoletti, high school special education to third-grade teacher; Kellie Ann Maute, elementary special education to fourth-grade teacher; Tina Eberhart, high school social studies to middle school social studies; Marcy Bebout, high school special education to high school family and consumer science; Brian Eisiminger, high school Spanish and Italian to high school music; Michael Churney, high school vocational-agriculture to elementary special education; and Ashton Shaffer, high school special education to high school social studies.
The board approved an agreement with West Virginia University to provide athletic trainer services at a cost of $52,049.
It also approved an insurance package for property, commercial auto and umbrella coverage totaling $71,204 and workers’ compensation insurance coverage at $77,508. Business manager Deborah Crouse noted worker’s compensation costs dropped about $40,000 while other insurances increased about 5 or 6 percent.
