Dora Straight Bowling

Dora Straight Bowling, 87, of Washington, formerly of Fairmont, W.Va., died Thursday, June 20, 2013, in her home, surrounded by her family.

Mary Mayne Paxton Gifford

Devout Christian loved reading


Mary “Ruth” Mayne Paxton Gifford, 92, of Washington, died Thursday, June 20, 2013, in her home.


She was born May 15, 1921, in Washington, a daughter of Clyde and Hazel Loughman Mayne.


Mrs. Gifford worked at her father’s Clover Farm Grocery Store for 30 years, Duncan Miller Glass Co., Jeanie’s Print Shop for 10 years and Gospel Book Store for 10 years.


A devout Christian and very giving person, she was a member of Washington Alliance Church.


Mrs. Gifford loved reading.


Her first husband, Lloyd G. Paxton, died in 1990.


On July 31, 1992, she married the Rev. Charles A. Gifford, who died January 31, 2005.


Surviving are a daughter, Hazel L. Contorakes of Washington; a sister, Dorothy M. Kraushaar of Dallas, Texas; a grandson, Joseph Michael (Kim) Selva; two great-grandchildren, Mariah Ann Selva and Michael Melnyk; and a great-great-grandchild, Katie Ahleeyah.


Mrs. Gifford leaves behind her caregivers, Linda Morris and Jody Marshman.


Deceased are a son, Ronald S. Paxton; a grandchild, David Paul Jones; and two sisters, Irene Mayne and Helen Gertrude Bales.


Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 24, with the Rev. James Newman officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. A memorial service for Mary Ann “Mimi” Long Kovalan, who died April 18, 2013, will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 23, in American Legion Post 639, 208 Main Street, Claysville.


Elna Mea Mounts

Celebrated her faith by singing in church


Elna Mea Mounts, 78, of Washington, died Thursday, June 20, 2013.


She was born July 3, 1934, in Washington, a daughter of Albert and Alberta Reed Huston.


Mrs. Mounts was a homemaker and, at one time, worked at Paul’s Super Market and Dr. Stahl’s office, prior to her marriage.


She was a member of Claysville Christian Church.


Mrs. Mounts enjoyed music. Singing in church was used as a celebration of her faith.


On November 23, 1958, she married William Howard Mounts, who died November 6, 2009.


Surviving are two daughters, Lori (Randy) Polan of West Alexander and Debbie (Ronald E.) Gardner of Claysville; and three grandchildren, Joshua (Ginger) Polan, Jeremy (Melissa) Polan and Brandon Gardner.


Deceased, in addition to her parents, are four brothers, Charlie, Russell, Roy and Albert; and two sisters, Erma and Wilma.


Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 24, with the Rev. Meade Lacock officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Mary Skirchak

Mary Skirchak, 92, of Cokeburg, died Thursday, June 20, 2013, in her home.

Robert E. Sweeney

U.S. Army vet enjoyed hunting, professional wrestling


Robert E. Sweeney, 75, of Jefferson, and formerly of Nemacolin, died at 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2013, in Donnell House, Washington.


He was born May 26, 1938, in Franklin Township, a son of the late Robert E. and Freda M. Rumble Sweeney.


Mr. Sweeney was a graduate of Mapletown High School and resided in Greene County most of his life.


He served with the U.S. Army in Germany from 1958 until 1960.


Mr. Sweeney enjoyed hunting, fishing and professional wrestling.


Surviving are two sons, William L. Sweeney and wife Barbara, with whom he made his home in Jefferson, and James E. Sweeney and wife Martha of Carmichaels; two daughters, Barbara Jean Sweeney and companion Edvin Martell of Oxon Hill, Md., and Tresa L. Lipscomb and husband Ken of Carmichaels; six grandchildren, William Sweeney Jr., Sandi Willhoft, Joshua Sweeney, Kody Sweeney, Tony Lipscomb and Kenzie Renee Lipscomb; two great-grandchildren, Carson and Ethan Sweeney; a brother, James I. Sweeney of Greensboro; and a nephew, Eric Sweeney.


Family and friends are welcome from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Yoskovich Funeral Home (724-966-5500), Martin J. Yoskovich, funeral director, 300 South Vine Street (Route 88), Carmichaels, where the service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 22. The Rev. Bruce R. Judy will officiate. Interment will follow in Greene County Memorial Park, Morgan Township, with military honors accorded by American Legion Post 400 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491. Betty Lou Teets, 66, of Maidsville, W.Va., died at 12:50 a.m. Thursday, June 20, 2013, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
