Bernard R. Caffrey

WWII veteran enjoyed traveling


Bernard R. Caffrey, 92, of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Washington, died unexpectedly Saturday, June 15, 2013, in his home.


A veteran of World War II, he served as an airplane mechanic. Following, he had a varied work career as a steam shovel operator in the coal industry, a streetcar trolley operator and a steelworker in the specialties department of Jessop Steel, now Allegheny Ludlum, from where he retired.


Mr. Caffrey much enjoyed traveling, camping, square dancing and attending the trolley operator’s reunion for many years.


Surviving are daughters Patricia Caffrey of Washington, Louise (Bernard) Hewett of Truth or Consequences, N.M., and Jane (Arch) McKown of Port Deposit, Md., and sons David Caffrey of Washington and Dennis M. Caffrey of Pittsburgh. Also surviving is his first wife and mother of his children, Dorothy J. Caffrey of Washington. At the request of the deceased, there will be no visitation and burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Washington County Trolley Museum, celebrating its 50th anniversary, 1 Museum Road, Washington, PA, 15301, or a charity of one’s choice.


Theodore C. Dempe

A memorial gathering for close friends and family of Theodore C. Dempe, who died June 14, 2013, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., the time of a celebration of life service, Saturday, June 29, in Nation Funeral Home Inc., 220 East Lincoln Avenue, McDonald.


Martin L. Rancosky

Monongahela resident


Martin L. “Marty” Rancosky, 59, of Monongahela, died Monday, June 24, 2013, in his home.


He was born September 30, 1953, in Brownsville, a son of the late Paul and Emma Adams Rancosky.


Deceased is his wife, LeAnn Rancosky.


Surviving are his wife, Donna M. Hovanic Rancosky; son Matthew Rancosky and wife Caryn; granddaughter Alyssa Rancosky; stepchildren Holly and Phil Varndell and family, Sam and Christina Murphy and daughter and Annette and Bob Volpe and family; sisters Shirley Arnold and husband Ernie and Cindy Blanda and husband Frank; brother Paul Rancosky and wife Frances; and several nieces and nephews.


Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Skirpan Funeral Home, 135 Park Street, Brownsville, where a funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 28, with Pastor Bob Schaefer officiating. Gerald R. Sims

U.S. Army veteran


Gerald R. “Jerry” Sims, 68, of Houston, died Monday, June 24, 2013, in Kindred Hospital, Oakdale.


He was born November 2, 1944, in Midland, a son of Edward and Edna Elder Sims.


Mr. Sims worked for Pennsylvania American Water Co.


He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.


Surviving are his wife, Dianna Bowman; six children, Gerald Bowman (Charisse) of Canonsburg, Shane Bowman of Houston, Shelly Wong of Lakewood, Calif., Jeri Williams of Victorville, Calif., Brandi Perkins (Ronald) of Washington and Shayla Green (Phillip) of Coraopolis; two brothers, Edward Sims III (Dinah) and Phillip Sims, both of Canonsburg; three sisters, Lorraine “Pinky” Powell and Edith “Hemmie” Davis (Robert), both of Maryland, and Patricia “Lucy” Sims of Detroit, Mich.; and 12 grandchildren.


Deceased are sister Catherine Mae Sims and two brothers, James Sims and Joseph Settles.


A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 27, in McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston.
