These days, woefully few of us adhere strictly to the federal laws establishing guidelines for extending proper respect to the flag. The matter was discussed by Bill Shuster in his Tuesday letter, “Not in the mood for celebration.”
I encourage Shuster not to be disillusioned. Toward that end, I offer an extract from a pep talk delivered in 1941 by Winston Churchill when he was Britain’s prime minister: “Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never, in nothing, great or small, large or petty – never give in, except to convictions of honor or good sense.”
Oh, to be a great thinker. I would have simply said thank you.
