Donora police officer’s murder topic of new TV show
Investigation Discovery last week launched the second season of its “Evil Twins” series with a show detailing the chilling story about identical twins from Donora, one of whom has been the chief suspect in the murder of his father and, years later, was convicted of killing his neighbor.
“Blood Brothers,” produced by Sirens Media of Silver Spring, Md., used the Observer-Reporter’s archives to build its story about the 1986 killing of Donora police officer Alfred Calzacorto Sr., how his son Brian figured into the case and how advances in DNA testing led to his conviction 17 years later in the brutal slaying of a cocktail waitress in Clearwater, Fla. No one has ever been charged in the slaying of the elder Calzacorto.
The episode also features interviews of Observer-Reporter staff writer Scott Beveridge, who wrote about the Calzacorto homicide, and retired Donora police officer Joe Greco, and uses the newspaper’s photographs taken at the officer’s funeral.
It further illustrates how jurors in the Florida trial in the killing of Laurie Colannino had to decide whether Brian Calzacorto or Alfred Calzacorto Jr. committed the murder because, as identical twins, they have matching DNA.
