A Washington man was arrested Monday morning by Washington police after he allegedly pointed a handgun at his girlfriend during an argument at her home.

Vontey Lamar Johnson, 30, formerly of Charleroi, is accused of pointing a .22-caliber handgun at 40-year-old Marlo A. Barry and threatening to kill her.

Police were called to the home at 257 N. Franklin St. after the 911 center received a call that a man had pointed a gun at a woman. The caller, later identified as Barry, said she was in the basement and Johnson was in a second-floor bedroom. When police arrived, a dispatcher updated officers with a report that Johnson also was in the basement of the home.

Police went to the house and said they saw Johnson start to leave through the basement door. When the officers told him to continue to come out, he reportedly tried to go back inside the house.

When Cpl. Benjamin Borkowski and Officer Willis McConnell tried to take Johnson into custody, he allegedly struggled with the officers, who took him to the ground. He continued to struggle with them as they placed him in handcuffs, police said.

Barry told police that when Johnson woke up, he started to argue with her. He then allegedly got the handgun and forced her down into a closet, pointed the gun in her face and threatened to kill her. She said that when he allowed her to get up, she ran into the basement and called 911.

Police said they found a .22-caliber handgun in a second-floor closet.

Johnson was arraigned before District Judge Robert Redlinger on charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threats, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and person not to possess a firearm. He was placed in Washington County jail on $25,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 29 before Redlinger.
