Cal’s Miles on Jets practice squad
The New York Jets added defensive back Rontez Miles to their practice sqaud Sunday.
Miles, an All-American and two-time PSAC Defensive Player of the Year while at from California University, was signed by the Jets to a free-agent contract in the spring. He was in the final cutdown by the Jets but added to the practice squad Sunday.
The Jets had another California University produce in wide receiver Thomas Mayo but cut him last month.
The Jets also claimed running back Alex Green, who led Green Bay in rushing last season, off waivers from the Packers.
The Jets were awarded tackle Ben Ijalana from Indianapolis and linebacker Scott Solomon from Tennessee off waivers.
Curry cut by Carolina: Dom Curry, a California University product, was cut by Carolina as the Panthers reached the 53-man toster limit. Curry, a tight end, Curry was originally signed by the St. Louis Rams in 2010 and als played for the Detroit Lions.
Manuel returns to Bills’ practice: Buffalo Bills quarterback EJ Manuel returned to practice after missing two weeks because of a left knee injury.
Manuel participated in warm-ups and individual drills during the portion of practice open to the media. He moved well and did not appear to show any effects from the injury. He was wearing a small brace on his left knee underneath his black spandex.
Manuel had been out since being hurt Aug. 16 in Buffalo’s second preseason game. He had what the team referred to as a “minor procedure” on the knee Aug. 18.
Cardinals pick up former Steelers NT: The Arizona Cardinals have been awarded two players off waivers, offensive tackle Bradley Sowell from the Indianapolis Colts and nose tackle Alameda Ta’amu from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Sowell played in 10 games as an undrafted rookie last season for Indianapolis. Cardinals coach Bruce Arians was first offensive coordinator, then interim head coach with the Colts at the time. Ta’amu, a fourth-round draft pick last season, was inactive for seven games and on the practice squad for six weeks last season.
Former Steelers LB lands in Denver: Thin at linebacker, the Denver Broncos claimed Adrian Robinson off waivers from Philadelphia Sunday and released fullback Jacob Hester.
The Eagles acquired Robinson, a second-year pro, from Pittsburgh in exchange for running back Felix Jones Aug. 23.
Robinson made the Steelers as an undrafted rookie free agent last season from Temple.
Raider get Browns DT: The Oakland Raiders have claimed guard Antonie McClain off waivers from Baltimore and defensive tackle Brian Sanford from Cleveland.
Falcons cut ties with Banks: The Atlanta Falcons have signed eight players to their practice squad, including receivers James Rodgers and Darius Johnson.
The list of players signed Sunday does not include linebacker Brian Banks, who was cut Saturday. Banks was trying to launch his career after spending five years in prison on a rape conviction that was overturned last year.
