Susan Marie Florio, 91, of Atlasburg, died Sunday, September 1, 2013, in Washington Hospital.

She was born December 7, 1921, in Atlasburg, a daughter of the late Angelo and Raphella Barra Romeo.

Mrs. Florio was a mother and homemaker; however, during World War II, she was a “Rosie the Riveter,” working as a welder for American Bridges in Ambridge.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Burgettstown.

Mrs. Florio enjoyed baking, doing crossword puzzles, gardening, bird-watching and, most especially, spending time with her family.

Surviving are four daughters, Elizabeth Jane (wife of the late Chuck) Buzzatto of Bridgeville, Rosalie (Anthony) Loskoch of Gibsonia, Janet Florio of Atlasburg and Susan Marie (John) Schwartz of Coraopolis; six grandchildren, Charles Buzzatto, Nicole Flaherty, Anthony Loskoch and Jack, Benjamin and Justin Schwartz; and three great-grandchildren, Carlo and Giavanna Buzzatto and Ella Flaherty.

Deceased are her husband, Edward “Duke” Florio, who died May 5, 1983; and siblings Elpido Romano, John Romeo, Kathryn Buxton, Thelma Vendetti, Antoinette Mamone, Ann Mondin, Mary Sczruba and Josephine Sartori.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Taucher Funeral Home, 23 Erie Mine Road, Burgettstown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 7, in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Burgettstown, with the Rev. George Moneck, pastor, as celebrant. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Burgettstown.
