Mystery Photo No. 44

  • September 22, 2013

Who are these kids? Where were they playing? Who took the photo, and when?

These are some questions we’d like to have answers to, and we hope our readers can assist us.

This image from the Observer-Reporter archive is from an 8-by-10-inch print. The back is stamped “COPY” along with the address of Observer Publishing Co. and the date – June 30, 1967.

That would be the date that the copy was made, most likely for a commercial customer. But it is evident from the children’s clothing that the picture was taken earlier, perhaps the 1940s or ’50s.

The only thing clear is that one of the kids is named Bill, because that’s what’s printed on his cap.

The girl in the white dress is riding on the handlebars of a boy’s bike. Kids used to do that in the days before bicycle helmets and when skinned knees and elbows were a daily occurrence in a child’s life. Modern parents may be horrified.

If any of our readers can help us solve this Mystery Photo, please email Park Burroughs, retired executive editor, at, or call and leave a message for him along with your telephone number at 724-222-2200, extension 2400.

With a little luck and some help from you, we’ll be able to solve this mystery and publish our findings next Monday.
