Thomas More deals Waynesburg first loss
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – Domonique Hayden rushed for 212 yards and scored three touchdowns, and Jensen Gebhardt passed for three scores, as Thomas More remained undefeated with a 49-28 victory over Waynesburg in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
Kyle Fuller returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown late in the first half for Thomas More (2-0, 3-0).
Hayden, who did not play against Waynesburg last year because of an injury, scored on runs of five and 44 yards, and caught a 36-yard scoring pass from Gebhardt early in the third quarter that gave the Saints a 35-14 lead.
Gebhardt threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Goose Cohorn in the first quarter, and a 38-yarder to Tyler Vogelpohl early in the second quarter, giving Thomas More the lead for good at 14-7.
Waynesburg (1-1, 3-1) led 7-0 on a 16-yard pass from Carter Hill to Josh Tolliver less than eight minutes into the game. It was the first score Thomas More allowed all season.
Hill completed 34 of 52 passes for 334 yards and three scores.
Waynesburg trailed 21-7 when Fuller picked off a Hill pass – the only interception thrown by the Waynesburg quarterback this season – and returned it for a touchdown with 1:20 left in the first half.
Waynesburg quickly drove for a score just before halftime as Willie Leavell caught a five-yard TD pass from Hill that pulled the Yellow Jackets to within 28-14 with 16 seconds left. Leavell also had a 28-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Thomas More pulled away by scoring 21 third-quarter points to open a 49-21 lead. Waynesburg’s Jordan Voitus closed the scoring with a four-yard pass from Hill in the fourth quarter.
