Man stabbed in Greene County
WAYNESBURG – A Greene County man was stabbed during a dispute outside of the Eagles Club No. 598, 58 W. High St. in Waynesburg, Thursday morning. Joshua Lee Arthur, 35, of 142 Good Hill Road, Prosperity, was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va. with a knife wound to his left side below the rib cage.
A suspect, Christopher Scott Smith, 33, of 135 Laurel Run Road, Waynesburg has been charged with criminal attempt homicide, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another and harassment.
Officers from the Waynesburg Borough Police Department were called to investigate a stabbing in the area of the club at 2:25 a.m. When they arrived on scene Arthur was bleeding profusely, according to police. He told them he had been assaulted and stabbed by Smith during an altercation along Fruit Alley.
According to a criminal complaint, filed before Greene County Magisterial District Judge Louis Dayich, Arthur told police the altercation was preceded by incidents inside the club where Smith allegedly harassed other patrons, including Arthur’s mother, Donna Arthur, the lead bartender.
Arthur confronted Smith inside the club’s restroom regarding statements that Smith allegedly made about Donna Arthur, according to the complaint.
Police said Smith later left the club via the front entrance on High Street and Arthur left through the Cherry Alley exit. When they came together in Fruit Alley, the altercation ensued.
A few minutes later another patron exited the club and found Arthur in Fruit Alley, bleeding from the wound to his left abdomen.
Smith, who had left the scene, would eventually call Greene County 911 to report having been involved in a fight at the Eagle’s Club. Pennsylvania State Police arranged to pick him up from a location in West Waynesburg for transport to the borough police station. On station, Smith provided a statement regarding the incident. According to the complaint, Smith admitted being involved in a fight with Arthur outside of the club immediately after leaving it. He told police he left the scene because a group of people were taunting him. He said that Arthur had assaulted him in the neck and face but police said they found no evidence to support this claim.
Police said they interviewed club patrons who supported Arthur’s assertion that Smith had harassed others inside the club. None of those questioned had witnessed the actual stabbing but police are seeking an individual for questioning who is believed to have seen it.
Arthur was transported from the scene of the stabbing by EMS Southwest Ambulance for air transport to Morgantown. His condition is unknown at this time.
Smith is being held without possibility of bail in the Greene County Prison due to the charge of criminal attempt homicide which if convicted could carry a life sentence. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Nov. 1 before Dayich.
