Chamber’s Christmas parade Saturday

WAYNESBURG – The Waynesburg Area Chamber of Commerce is making its final preparations for the 2013 Downtown Waynesburg Christmas Parade to be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. The execution of the parade is underwritten by Greene County Tourism.

Nearly 100 entries representing schools, churches, civic organizations and businesses from all over the county are scheduled to appear.

Miss Rain Day 2013 Stephanie Mitchell and the chamber’s 2013 Distinguished Service Award winners, retired Waynesburg Borough Police Chief Timothy Hawfield, Jeff McCracken, representing the late Johnny McCracken, and representatives from Greene Community Church, will have the honor of leading the parade down High Street as grand marshals.

Trophies will be awarded to the Judges Choice as well as the top three floats and three honorable mentions. Judging will take place during the lineup in the staging area. And of course Santa and Mrs. Claus will be the guests of honor at the end of the parade.

Also, WCTV, Waynesburg University’s television will be videotaping the parade for a later broadcast on local stations. WCTV is student operated under the direction of Bill Molzon, director of TV operations at the university.

Residents living around the university and parks are reminded that lineup will begin in that area at noon on parade day. The United Methodist Church parking lot, Hook Law Office parking lot and both Baptist church parking lots will be in use for the lineup and parking will not be available.

Several streets will be blocked off to traffic not associated with the parade starting at noon and ending at 4 p.m. Route 19 South and High Street traffic from McCracken’s Pharmacy to the First Baptist Church will also be detoured beginning at 2 p.m. Traffic in the area will be detoured using West Street and Franklin Street. Vehicles traveling west on High Street should turn left onto Porter Street and follow the detour west. Those wanting to travel north should turn right onto Porter and follow the detour north.

Parking is not permitted on Franklin Street between West and Washington steets and on Richhill Street from College Street between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Parking s also prohibited on High Street from West to Porter streets.
