Cal women dominant in upset of West Chester

Kaitlynn Fratz and Irina Kokulj each scored 21 points and California led nearly the entire game before upsetting West Chester, 85-79, in a PSAC crossover game Tuesday night.


The Vulcans moved to 3-5 and West Chester fell to 6-3.


Cal held a 40-36 lead at halftime and stretched it to 11 with 6:23 left, 64-53. West Chester got the lead down to three, 70-67, with 2:37 to play but could get no closer.


Emma Mahady added 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Vulcans, who led for all but 2:40 of the game and never trailed in the second half. Elena Antonenko had six points and 12 rebounds.


Brittany Sicinski led all scorers with 27 points for West Chester. Dallas Ely had 20 and Kendall Benovy 17.


Waynesburg 78, Mount Aloysius 65: Waynesburg University used just eight players during Tuesday night’s road game at Mount Aloysius College. That shortened roster was more than enough to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 78-65 victory.


Lauren Blair led a quartet of double-digit scorers with a career-high 27 points over 37 minutes played. She also made five-of-10 attempts from three-point range. Junior forward Elaine Hasek notched her third double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. That total also is the highest single-game rebounding mark for any Yellow Jacket this year.


Giuliani added 15 points, while junior guard Rebecca Kerr chipped in 10 points. Freshman forward Courtney Sargent went for eight points and nine rebounds.


Waynesburg (2-5), which led 32-29 at halftime, sank 22 of 35 free throw attempts. Mount Aloysius (3-3) hit on just 11-of-20 tries from the charity stripe.


Men’s Results


California 69, West Chester 64: California University bolted to a 15-point halftime lead, then hung on for a 69-64 victory over West Chester in a PSAC crossover game.


The win moves Cal to 3-6 and West Chester fell to 6-3.


Tynell Fortune was nearly perfect, hitting 4 of 6 shots from the field, included 3 of 3 from three-point range, and sank all eight free-throw attempts for 19 points. Jake Jacubec added 14 points and Drew Cook 11.


Alonzo Murphy and Arman Marks each had seven rebounds.


Corey Blake led West Chester with 17 points and Eddie Mitchell added 15. West Chester outscored Cal, 43-33, in the second half.
