Pa. suspect’s fatal wound ruled self-inflicted
MONROEVILLE (AP) – Authorities in Western Pennsylvania say a burglary suspect found dead after a shootout with a police officer died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office earlier identified him as 26-year-old Paul Slimick of Freeport.
County detectives and local police said an officer responded to a report of a burglary in progress at a Monroeville residence at about 10 p.m. Monday.
Lt. Andrew Schurman said he ordered the suspect to stop, but the man fired and the officer returned fire, and the suspect died less than an hour later at Forbes Regional Hospital.
Medical examiner Karl Williams said Monday that the officer’s .45 caliber gunshots struck Slimick only in the legs, but he died of a contact wound to the head from his own .38 caliber handgun.
