Wrestling: McGinnis’ 100th helps C-H rally for victory

Chartiers-Houston overcame an early 18-point deficit with a series of pins to rally and defeat visiting Carlynton 39-27 Wednesday night in a Class AA Section 1-A match.

One of those key falls for C-H was a first-period pin by Rich McGinnis (145). It was the 100th career victory for McGinnis, who finished seventh in the WPIAL last year at 120 pounds.

Josh Kuslock got C-H rolling with a falls at 120 and was followed by a pin from Ben Hritsko (126). C-H’s Matt DeRsoa (138) and McGinnis had consecutive falls, and following a forfeit to Carlynton, Pete Provenzano (160) and Derek Hull (170) closed the match with pins for the Bucs.

McGuffey 36, Chartiers Valley 26: Tyler Harris (152) and Evan Yoest (160) closed the match by scoring wins as McGuffey held off Chartiers Valley 36-26 in a Class AAA Section 4-A match.

McGuffey led 29-28 heading into 152, and Harris cruised to a 13-0 major decision. Yoest followed with a 3-0 decision win, and Chartiers Valley had two team points deducted following the bout.

McGuffey wrestled well at the lower weights with Lane Klein (106) and Gage Nicolella (113) winning by fall. Heavyweight Ryan Steinstraw also had a pin for the Highlanders and Aaron Harris (132) won by technical fall.

Burgettstown 66, Laurel 12: Burgettstown got four pins on the way to a 66-12 win over Laurel in a Section 1-B dual meet in Class AA.

Getting pins for the Blue Devils (1-0) were John Dennis (126), Tristan Nicholson (170), Brandon Krynak (220) and Brandon Hucik (Hvy).

Dalton Rosa (182) and Justin Powell (195) had pins for Laurel.

Mapletown 45, Washington 30: Mapletown won eight of 14 bouts on the way to a 45-30 win over Washington in a Section 2-A dual meet in Class AA.

Getting pins for the Maples (2-0) were Colby Kincell (132), Keith Popernack (152), Adam Hein (195), Harley Gee (220) and Zach Brown (Hvy). Brandon Rimmel (126) also won by a decision for Mapletown.

Kurt Atkins (138), Zhean Kelly (145) and Shawn Hughes (182) had pins for Washington (0-4).

Trinity 58, Moon 8: Trinity won eight of 14 bouts on the way to a 58-8 win over moon in a Section 4-A dual meet in Class AAA.

While the Hillers (2-1) were forced to forfeit the first bout of the meet, five wrestlers earned wins for Trinity. Tristan Buxton (113), Zach Magdich (145), Robert West (220) and Austin Fife (Hvy.) got pins for the Hillers, and Justin Ritter (160) won by decision.

Tyler Solt (126) won in a decision for Moon and Pat Barcaskey (182) had a technical fall for the Tigers.

Peters Township 52, Mt. Lebanon 23: Peters Township won nine of 14 bouts on the way to a 52-23 win over Mt. Lebanon in a Section 2-B dual meet in Class AAA.

Michael McAleavey (16) got a techincal fall for the Indians (2-0, 3-0), while A.J. Buckiso (113), Ty Buckiso (132), Italo Merante (138), Sammy Florentio (145) and Austin Ansell (220) won by decisions for Peters Township.

Kevin Kinyua (126), Kellen Stout (182) and Zenul Zaynullaer (Hvy) had wins for Mt. Lebanon.

Bentworth 43, Beth-Center 29: Bentworth swept the lightweights on the way to a 43-29 victory over Beth-Center in a Section 2-A dual meet in Class AAA.

Jake Rothka (120), Tyler Mitchell (126), Matt Vickless (132), George Liberatore (138) and Paul Mizia (182) had pins for the Bearcats.

Anthony Welsh (152) had a pin and Jason Stay (160) won by technical fall for the Bulldogs.
