Small college basketball: Cal, Waynesburg get home-court wins
Alonzo Murphy’s layup with 35 seconds remaining gave California a 50-49 victory over Cheyney in a PSAC game Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.
Murphy’s basket also gave Cal (4-6) a sweep of two PSAC games in two nights. The Vulcans defeated West Chester Tuesday.
Cheyney (2-8) had taken a 49-48 lead with 52 seconds left on a basket by Jerrod Johnson. The Wolves led 28-22 at halftime and led by as many as eight points in the game.
Guard Jake Jacubec was the only player to score in double figures for Cal with 10 points. The Vulcans forced only 11 Cheyney turnovers but turned them into 17 points. The Wolves scored only five points off 11 Cal turnovers.
Deshawn Curtis scored a game-high 25 points for Cheyney.
Waynesburg 84, Hiram 70: Jason Propst made 11 of 13 shots and scored a game-high 23 points to power Waynesburg to an 84-70 victory over visiting Hiram in a non-conference game.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Waynesburg (5-5).
Propst made nine of his first 10 shots and Waynesburg took command of the game early in the second half. The Yellow Jackets used a 10-0 run to open a 53-38 lead. The streak was fueled by three-point field goals by Byrum Luoco and Christian Koroly.
Propst finished with a double-double, collecting a game-high 10 rebounds. He also had four assists and three rebounds.
B.J. Durham scored 13 points for Waynesburg, Jacob Fleegle had 12 and Nate Labishak 11.
Hiram (2-6) was led by Andre Serra’s 11 points.
California 71, Cheyney 47: Emma Mahady scored a game-high 19 points and California won its second game in as many nights, defeating Cheyney 71-47, in a PSAC game.
Mahady made five of Cal’s seven three-point field goals and Vulcans (4-5) pulled away over the final 20 minutes after leading 31-24 at halftime. The Vulcans took control of the game by closing the first half with an 8-1 run.
Eleven Cal players were in the scoring column. Precious Martin had 11 points and Ashley Hines had 10 points.
Cheyney is 1-8 overall.
Waynesburg 78, Mount Aloysius 65: Waynesburg used only eight players during its road game at Mount Aloysius. That shortened roster was more than enough to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 78-65 victory.
Lauren Blair led a quartet of double-digit scorers with a career-high 27 points over 37 minutes. She also made five-of-10 attempts from three-point range. Junior forward Elaine Hasek notched her third double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. That total also is the highest single-game rebounding mark for any Yellow Jacket this year.
Giuliani added 15 points, while junior guard Rebecca Kerr chipped in 10 points. Freshman forward Courtney Sargent went for eight points and nine rebounds.
Waynesburg (2-5), which led 32-29 at halftime, made 22 of 35 free-throw attempts. Mount Aloysius (3-3) hit on just 11-of-20 tries from the free-throw line.
