Pa. officer hurt in fall from overpass to retire

January 3, 2014

CRANBERRY (AP) – A Western Pennsylvania police officer is retiring at the end of the month because he says he’ll never fully recover from back and other injuries suffered when he fell more than 20 feet from a highway overpass while chasing a motorist who ran from a crash and died when he also fell from the bridge.

Cranberry Township Cpl. Dan Hahn returned to light duty in December 2012, about 22 months after he hopped over a jersey barrier while chasing 22-year-old Thomas Booth back on Feb. 14, 2011.

Neither man apparently realized they were on an overpass above Interstate 79.

Booth died. Hahn broke his back, sternum, ribs, and had a concussion.

The municipality about 20 miles north of Pittsburgh plans to promote the 50-year-old Hahn to sergeant before he retires Jan. 31.
