INDIANA, Pa. (AP) — A western Pennsylvania man has pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in the death of his toddler stepson last year.

Twenty-eight-year-old Juan Campbell of Burrell Township entered the plea Monday in Indiana County Court. He will be sentenced in April.

Prosecutors dropped charges of aggravated assault, child endangerment and recklessly endangering another person in the death of 22-month-old Malachi Patterson, which occurred two days after he was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital in May.

Prosecutors accused the defendant of using his hand to smother the boy to stop him from crying. He told authorities he had found the child unresponsive in their apartment.
