H.S. Basketball: California closes on section title

California is one step closer to making history.

Freshman Jenna Miller scored 16 points to lead the Trojans to a 54-31 win over West Greene in Section 3-A play. If California (8-0, 15-3) wins Monday night against Mapletown, the Trojans will clinch at least a share of the section title – its first since 1982 and only the second in school history.

Kylie Huffman added nine points, 10 rebounds and five blocks for California, while Kat Pankratz also scored nine points.

Madison Raber led West Greene (4-4, 10-7) with 19 points.

Fort Cherry 56, Clairton 27: Three players reached double figures to lift Fort Cherry past Clairton, 56-27, in a non-section game.

Rachel Bellhy had a team-high 18 points, Tina Bellhy scored 12 points for the Rangers (11-5) and Jenna Lucas chipped in 10 points for Fort Cherry. Mya Pettiford led Clairton (0-16) with nine points.

Chartiers-Houston 60, Monessen 20: Addy Knetzer and Jalynn Myers combined 33 points to lead Chartiers-Houston to a 60-20 victory over Monessen in a non-section matchup.

Knetzer had a team-high 18 points and Myers chipped in 15 for the Buccaneers (12-6), who led 37-15 at halftime. Monessen was led by Teraee Bradford and Mariha Johnson, who each scored seven points.

South Fayette 59, Washington 29: Carly Kilgus and Emily Anderson had 12 points each as South Fayette defeated Washington, 59-29, in a non-section game.

Mikayla Fetchet added 10 points for South Fayette (9-10), which led 49-17 after three quarters.

India March led Washington (12-6) with 14 points.

Boys basketball

Monessen 100, Avella 44: Monessen had five players reach double digures in the Greyhounds’ 100-44 win over Avella in Section 3-A play.

Clintell Gillaspie led Monessen with 18 points, while Javon Brown had 14, Lavelle Rush 13, Justice Rawlins 11 and Jaden Altomore 10. The Greyhounds (8-0, 14-5) led 52-23 at halftime before pouring on 48 points in the second half. Monessen has yet to lose a game to a Class A opponent.

Walt Kopko led Avella (1-7, 3-15) with a team-high 19 points.

Brentwood 56, Burgettstown 39: Troy Elphinstone had 22 points as Brentwood defeated Burgettstown, 56-39, in a Section 4-AA game.

Connor McWilliams added 10 points for Brentwood (5-6, 10-8).

Dylan Dhans led Burgettstown (2-8, 4-16) with 10 points.

Chartiers-Houston 63, Carrick 60: Chartiers-Houston trailed 60-59 with 40 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter when Miles Williamson’s layup gave the Buccaneers the lead. Alec Ferrari was fouled on the ensuing possession and hit both free throws to give the home team a three-point advantage.

Carrick missed a desparation three-point shot and fell to the Bucs, 63-60, in a non-section matchup.

Williamson led Chartiers-Houston (13-5) with 23 points, Kodie Hanley scored 15, AJ Myers added 11 and Ferrari finished with 10 to lift the Buccaneers to the win.

Tyler Thornton scored 17 points for Carrick (8-8) and Keenan Lowe added 15.

Mt. Lebanon 61, Trinity 47: Joey David had 21 points as Mt. Lebanon slowly pulled away from Trinity for a 61-47 Section 4-AAAA victory.

Eddie Jenkins added 18 points for the Blue Devils (8-4, 10-10).

Avery King had 19 points for Trinity (0-11, 2-15), while Nick Moretti added 11 points.
