Trial slated in 2012 Western Pa. complex slaying

  • February 3, 2014

UNIONTOWN (AP) – Trial is scheduled to begin Monday for a Western Pennsylvania man accused of having gunned down another man at a housing complex in 2012.

The (Uniontown) Herald-Standard says proceedings in the trial of 28-year-old Kurtavius Smith of Uniontown are slated in Fayette County Court.

Smith is charged in the May 2012 slaying of 28-year-old Marlin Crawford of Uniontown, who was shot in the head near Pershing Court.

Authorities allege in the criminal complaint that Smith had sent text messages to an ex-girlfriend expressing dismay that she was dating the victim, and in one text threatening to kill him.

Defense attorney Charles Hoebler questions whether jurors would conclude that the messages came from his client since there were multiple contacts in the phone listed under the same nickname.
