H.S. Basketball roundup: Gillaspie, Brown lead Monessen to win
Clintelle Gillaspie and Javon Brown combined for 42 points to power Monessen to a 78-54 victory over Eden Christian ina first-round game of the WPIAL Class A basketball playoffs Friday at Chartiers Valley High School.
Gillaspie poured in 22 and Brown 20 as the Greyhounds led from nearly start to finish in the game.
The Greyhounds (18-5) will play Wilkinsburg, a 74-62 winner over Union, in a second-round game at a time and date to be determined.
Justice Rawlins chipped in 11 points for Monessen, which led 36-22 at halftime and 60-40 after three quarters.
Carter Ehms had 21 points, Jeff Schmidt 11 and Drew Aiken eight for Eden Christian, which finsihed the season with a 9-13 record.
Lincoln Park 84, Mapletown 27: Maverick Rowan scored 25 points as top-seeded Lincoln Park jumped out to a 26-0 first quarter lead en route to an 84-27 win over Mapletown in a WPIAL Class A first round playoff game.
Ryan Skovranko added 20 points, Antonio Kellem 13 and Elijah Minnie 12 for Lincoln Park, which improves to 22-1 and advances to face Western Beaver in a second-round game at a date and time to be determined.
Mapletown finished its season at 7-13.
Shenango 54, Charleroi 48: Angelina Sibeto had 15 points as Shenango held off Charleroi, 54-48, in a WPIAL Class AA girls preliminary playoff game.
Samantha Seaburn added 13 points and Carolyn Patterson had 10 for Shenango (13-9), which advances to play unbeaten Burrell in a first round game Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.
Shenango jumped out to a 14-10 lead after one quarter, but the Cougars, who finish their season at 17-6, cut the lead to three at the half, 25-22.
Shenango maintained that advantage in the third quarter and then outscored the Cougars, 20-17, in the final quarter to earn the win.
Mia Woytovich led Charleroi with a game-high 19 points.
