High school softball: Defending state champs win opener, hit 5 home runs
Canon-McMillan, the defending PIAA Class AAAA state champion, picked up where it left off last season by slamming five home runs in an 18-3 victory over Upper St. Clair Thursday in a Section 4-AAAA game that lasted three innings.
Linda Rush went 4-for-4 with two home runs – one a grand slam – and six RBI for the Big Macs (1-0, 1-0). She also had a double. Brittney Crawford homered, doubled and drove in two runs and Abby McCartney hit a solo home run and went 3-for-3. Rush, Crawford and McCartney went back-to-back-to-back with their home runs.
C-M’s Olivia Lorusso went 3-for-3 with a home run, double and three RBI.
It is the first time in coach Michele Moeller’s 14-year stay as head coach at C-M that the Big Macs have hit five home runs in a game.
• Jefferson-Morgan snapped a four-year losing streak to Carmichaels with a 4-2 victory in a Section 2-A game.
Reagan Rush had a double and two RBI and Jessica Taylor a two-run single for the Rockets (2-0, 3-0), who last beat Carmichaels in the 2009-2010 season. Kirsten Stoneking added a double.
Amanda Brown had a double for the Mikes (0-1, 2-1).
• Waynesburg scored in all but one inning and defeated host Chartiers-Houston 15-2 in a Section 2-AA game.
Waynesburg (1-0, 1-1) scored four runs in the top of the first inning and led the rest of the way. Tiffany Ross had two doubles among the Raiders’ 13 hits. Tara Staley and Felicia Spitznogle each hit a triple, and winning pitcher Joran Moore and Emily Luckey doubled.
Sabrina Stankos hit a triple for Chartiers-Houston (0-1, 1-3) and Megan Kraushaar doubled.
• Jamie Schrock went 3-for-3 and knocked in two runs to help Bentworth stop Fort Cherry, 17-2, in Section 2-AA.
Aubree Yates and Micaela Danley each scored three runs for the Bearcats (1-0, 2-3), who benefitted from 20 walks.
Fort Cherry’s Brandi McHugh hit a solo home run (0-1, 0-1) and Klarissa Diamond had a triple.
• Madison Raber went 4-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and three runs scored to power West Greene to an 11-1 victory over California in a six-inning Section 2-A game.
Alyssa Raber had a double for the Pioneers (1-0, 1-2) and Emily Goodwin a two-run single. Cal fell to 0-2 in the section.
