Pa. woman gets 6 to 12 years in infant kidnapping
UNIONTOWN – A woman was sentenced to six to 12 years in prison for kidnapping an infant by luring the mother to a suburban motel with what authorities said was a phony story about a commercial photo shoot.
Yvonne Bradley, 48, put her head down on a desk and wept Thursday as the Fayette County jury verdict was announced. She was convicting her of kidnapping, interference of custody and endangering the welfare of children but acquitted of a count of unlawful restraint, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.
State police said Bradley told the child’s mother she was looking for babies to photograph for disposable diaper ads and they should stay overnight at a motel in Uniontown, about 40 miles south of Pittsburgh, in July 2012. Police said she offered to watch the boy so the mother could get baby supplies, but she and the child were gone when the mother came back.
Bradley denied having kidnapped the child, saying she was taking the boy to a convenience store to use a phone and to buy milk. As she was led from the courtroom, she said the jury’s verdict was “wrong.”
“There are a lot of people that know me, who know it was never my intent to hurt anybody,” Bradley said. “I apologize to anybody who’s been hurt.”
Defense attorney Brian Salisbury unsuccessfully argued that his client had planned to return, citing the fact that her cellphone and a diaper bag were left in the hotel room. He also said Bradley did nothing to disguise herself and was found within a few blocks of the hotel.
“Did she put a wig on?” Salisbury asked, also arguing that the child was undisguised. “No. She was taking the baby for a walk.”
Assistant District Attorney Michelle Kelley argued that the distance wasn’t evidence of innocence.
“One block from a mother is a substantial distance,” Kelley said. “This is over an hour. What’s she doing? She’s disappearing into the streets of Uniontown.”
Kelley also cited adoption papers left in the room as evidence that Bradley intended to keep the child.
