Mystery Photo No. 59: Any particular place to go?

Mystery Photo No. 59

This group of young women looks to be all packed up and ready to go. The problem is that we don’t know who they are, where they were standing or where they were headed.

We do know two things about this week’s Mystery Photo: The picture was taken March 8, 1967, and it was in a collection of photos marked “Floods.” It was apparently never published in the newspaper.

If any of our readers have a clue what was going on or can identify any of the six women and the man, email Park Burroughs, retired executive editor, at, or call and leave a message for him along with your telephone number at 724-222-2200, extension 2400. With a little help, we’ll be able to solve this puzzle and publish our findings next Monday.

Glyde Beach Club revisited

Unfortunately, we missed a message last week that would have put us in contact with Dot Conkle, whose knowledge of the Route 40 roadhouse is quite personal. She went dancing there in the early 1940s and met her husband, Merledean, at one of the dances. But her connection to the place goes much further: She has lived in an apartment in the same building for the past 51 years.

“It was at a dance that I met my husband in front of the fireplace that is now in my living room,” Mrs. Conkle said.

The couple were married in 1943, and Merledean Conkle died 27 years ago.
