A retail chain new to the region hopes to be the Peebles choice.

Peebles, a department store in existence since 1891, will have a grand opening at 9 a.m. today at the Widewaters Commons shopping complex outside Waynesburg.

“It’s a very exciting time. We’ve done a lot of hard work,” said Sarah Kovach, manager of the new store on Sugar Run Road, Franklin Township. Walgreen’s and Rite Aid are among the businesses nearby.

Apparently, corporate is excited as well. A flier states, “We’re happy to be part of the ‘Rain Day’ city.”

Timewise, the grand opening will be truly grand, lasting four days, with numerous specials available, Hours today through Saturday will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Those will be the standard Sunday hours. Peebles’ normal hours the rest of the week will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The retailer offers brand-name apparel, accessories, footwear, cosmetics and fragrances in the eastern and upper Midwest regions of the United States. This will be its 33rd store in Pennsylvania, but one of the few within a reasonable drive of Greene and Washington counties. The nearest are in Rostraver Township and Grafton, W.Va.

Its target demographic, invariably, is small towns and communities.

The chain is owned by Stage Stores, which is based in Houston, Texas, and also operating as Bealls, Palais Royal and Stage.

Kovach, who lives near Wheeling, W.Va., said the Greene County store has about 25 employees and will operate 14,000 square feet of space. “People say it’s a lot bigger than they thought it would be,” she said.
