Pursue excellence rather than “diversity”

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at the editorial on diversity that appeared in the May 7 newspaper.

Once upon a time, not too long ago, the United States was a wonderful melting pot. A rich blend of many cultures blending into one homogenous mixture called the American culture. What a wonderfully successful experiment it was. It had a thriving middle class that was the envy of the world, it landed a man on the moon, not once, but several times, with all returning safely, and many other great accomplishments.

Today, the left has decided that this wasn’t good, so along comes the “diversity movement,” where looks are more important than results. The same side of the political spectrum that is playing the race card now calls for us to worry about how many Latinos are in the area, that we have signs in Spanish, that we respect the Mexican flag in schools while saying that wearing an American flag makes others uncomfortable.

They also are now wanting foreign students to stay after getting educated here. What’s wrong with Americans?

Maybe, just maybe, the left has so watered down and destroyed the education system here that we need to import students that have been educated, not indoctrinated, to pursue higher studies.

About six years ago, I had an interview for a telecommunications engineer position, and during the interview, the subject of diversity came up.

The three candidates for this position were two white men who were technicians, and one black female who was an engineer. I could have handled the position as the next step on the career ladder. I explained my philosophy that if you pursue excellence over appearance, that the visuals would handle themselves, and the black female was an actual engineer, who could get up to speed quicker than I could, which was the truth.

The moral of my story is that if we raise standards, pursue excellence, hire the best, the “diversity” handles itself.
