JEFFERSON – Kirsten Stoneking and Brianna Smitley, two recent Jefferson-Morgan High School graduates, were the recipients of several scholarships awarded at the school’s awards banquet.
Stoneking, who will attend Waynesburg University where she will pursue a career in nursing, was the recipient of the Natalie Franks Memorial Scholarship, the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Company Scholarship, and a Jefferson-Morgan PTO Scholarship.
She had also received the West Penn Power/County of Greene Scholarship and a Waynesburg College Scholarship. Stoneking was presented with the U.S. Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award, outstanding senior female athlete for volleyball and softball as well as all-around outstanding female athlete.
Stoneking was president of council, and was a member of the Leo club and Intermediate Unit 1 Student Forum. She was homecoming attendant all four years, a May Day attendant her freshman year, J-M’s 2014 Miss Merry Christmas and was the 2014 May Queen.
Smitley, who will attend California University of Pennsylvania where she will pursue a degree in criminology, was the recipient of a Jefferson-Morgan PTO Scholarship and the American Legion Auxiliary Good Citizenship Award.
At Jefferson-Morgan, Smitley was a member of the yearbook staff, the drama club, SADD and was selected to attend county chorus. She was a letterman with the basketball team and a member of the volleyball and rifle teams.
Smitley also participated in the Upward Bound program through California University of Pennsylvania and represented the school at the regional fair, where she received a first and a second-place which allowed her to move on to the state competition.
