Shown is the third, but not last, scene at Baptist Road and Grandview Farms Drive, where a suspect carjacked a sedan before he was ultimately arrested by police.

A man who ran over and dragged a Baldwin police officer was shot in the back and arrested after he led police on a chase through the South Hills Wednesday afternoon.

Police were in the 1100 block of Boni Drive about 12:30 p.m. to serve an arrest warrant for Amy Calabrese, 31, who was wanted on theft charges, as Richard Desabetino, 33, attempted to flee, Baldwin police Chief Michael Scott said. Desabetino, also wanted for stealing and selling a bicycle, hit and dragged an officer with his car as he fled. Another officer then opened fire on the vehicle. The injured officer was taken to UPMC-Mercy hospital, Pittsburgh.

Officers then chased Desabetino through South Park before he abandoned his vehicle and stole an Oldsmobile sedan. He then drove through Bethel Park and wrecked that car into a Ford pickup truck at Baptist Road and Grandview Farms Drive before carjacking another vehicle and speeding into the Grandview Farms housing development, where he was cornered by police and arrested, according to Allegheny County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt. Desabetino was taken to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his back. It was unclear when he was shot.

Bethel Park police Chief John Mackey said shots were exchanged by the suspect and police in Baldwin and in Bethel Park, but no other officers were reported injured.
