Simon turns in solid start in Reds win over Braves
Alfredo Simon pitched seven strong innings to earn his first win in eight starts since the All-Star break and Todd Frazier homered as the Cincinnati Reds held on for a 5-3 win over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday.
Philadephia 7, St. Louis 1: Jimmy Rollins homered and Jerome Williams tossed eight strong innings to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 7-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Washington 14, San Francisco 6: Ian Desmond and Bryce Harper each homered and drove in two runs as the streaking Washington Nationals rallied from a five-run deficit to beat the San Francisco Giants 14-6.
Tampa Bay 2, Tortono 1: Evan Longoria singled home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1.
N.Y. Yankees 7, Chicago White Sox 4: Pinch-hitter Brian McCann lined a three-run homer with two outs in the 10th inning, and the New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 7-4 to complete a three-game sweep.
Cleveland 3, Houston 1: Trevor Bauer took a shutout into the seventh and won for the first time since July 18, leading the Cleveland Indians to a 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros on Sunday.
Chicago Cubs 2, Baltimore 1: Tsuyoshi Wada allowed Steve Pearce’s leadoff homer in the seventh inning for Baltimore’s only hit, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Orioles 2-1 on Sunday for a three-game sweep.
Wada (4-1) got a popout after the homer that landed on Waveland Avenue and departed to a standing ovation from the crowd of 32,774. He struck out a career-high eight and walked one in 6 1-3 innings in his eighth career start. He retired 16 straight after Adam Jones drew a two-out walk in the first.
Arismendy Alcantara homered run for the Cubs, who recorded their first series sweep since taking three straight at Boston from June 30 to July 2.
Hector Rondon struck out one in the ninth for his 21st save in 25 opportunities.
