A 17-year-old Amwell Township boy was seriously injured Saturday night when he fell off the roof of a moving sport utility vehicle driven by his stepfather and landed on the pavement.

State police Trooper Chad Weaver said the teen asked his stepfather for permission to ride on the vehicle.

The stepfather initially denied the request but then relented and agreed to allow the boy to ride, laying on the roof.

The two was traveling on Cortez Drive in Canton Township about 8 p.m. When the stepfather made the turn onto Laddie Drive, the boy lost his grip on the roof rack and fell off the side of the vehicle onto the road.

The 17-year-old, who was initially unconscious, was flown from a landing zone at Brownson House to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment of a head injury.

Police are continuing their investigation and charges are pending. Assisting were firefighters from Canton and Washington.
