CHARLESTON, S.C. - Tulane's Kevin Sims made a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 19 seconds to play and the Green Wave held on to beat Penn State 63-60 Friday in the second round of the Charleston Classic at Carolina First Arena.
"This is the first time this year that we've played hard for 40 minutes," Tulane coach Dave Dickerson said. "We've been trying to preach to our team to play good, solid basketball. Kevin Sims really came through for us."
Aaron Holmes led Tulane (1-2) with 17 points, while Kris Richard added 14. Sims finished with 11.

Tulane led by 10 with 7:57 to play, but Penn State battled back, despite shooting 27.6 percent from the field for the game.
After Sims' 3-pointer made it 62-58, Penn State missed two shots before Tulane's David Booker cleared the rebound and was fouled.
Booker made one of two free throws with 8.4 seconds to play and Jeff Brooks scored at the buzzer for Penn State.
The Green Wave shot 36 percent from the field, but made 21 of 26 free throws.
"That was the key to the game, our ability to make free throws, but most importantly our ability to get to the line," Dickerson said. "Penn State is a physical team. Our guys hung in there and made good plays."
Penn State opened the tournament with an 80-69 loss to UNC Wilmington.
Detroit 71, Robert Morris 59: Thomas Kennedy scored 19 points and had four steals in Detroit's 71-59 win over Robert Morris.
Kennedy had four of the Titans' 15 steals in the 2K Sports Classic.
In the first half, Detroit broke a 21-21 tie with six unanswered points. Eli Holman scored on a jump shot, Kennedy hit a layup and Xavier Keeling turned one of his two steals into a dunk for a 27-21 lead with 6:31 remaining before halftime.
Rob Robinson was one of two players in double figures for the Colonials (0-3). Jimmy Langhurst tallied 10 points and eight turnovers for Robert Morris.
Bloomfield (N.J.) 94, California 66: A 17-2 run late in the first half provided Bloomfield with a comfortable lead as it went on to defeat California, 94-66, in the Vulcans' season-opener Thursday night in the opening day of the Alaska Invitational, hosted by Alaska Fairbanks.
Gage Daye scored a game-high 35 points for Bloomfield (1-0) and was the lone Deacons player to score in double figures.
Bloomfield made 37 of 65 field goals (56.9 percent), including a 21-for-31 performance during the second half.
Andrew Young paced Cal (0-1) with 16 points. Kelsey Williams added 14 points, while Beth-Center graduate Ryne Niemiec scored five in his collegiate debut. Monessen graduate Tim Tyree did not score but played 16 minutes.
