Hey Ben, take a hint

This article has been read 979 times.

An open letter to Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger:

Guys, in general, like their favorite team's quarterback, especially one who has led them to two Super Bowl championships. It's a guy thing, for sure.

Fans of the female persuasion, however, may not share their male counterparts' feelings, especially when considering your off-field behavior. It's a girl thing, and although women may prefer their favorite players to be hot and sweaty, they don't want them to be dirty. That's a girl thing, a wife thing and, most definitely, a mother thing.

Lad, you've got to grow up. In one bad piece of a year, you messed up twice, colossally so, and all but blew the greatest sports gig you'll ever have because you obviously never learned to respect the people of Pittsburgh, the Rooney family or your teammates.

Worst of all, though, is that you seem to have never learned to respect young women.

No, you weren't charged with any crime for a serious breach of late-night behavior, but in many ways, the six-game suspension handed down Wednesday by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and the accompanying loss of $3 million, was to be expected.

The money you stand to lose is nowhere near the worst that can happen, because it already did. That you weren't traded means that when your exile from NFL play is complete, you will still have to face the people whom you disappointed so terribly - the team, the Rooneys, the fans and the kids who thought you were a hero. Nobody would trade places with you.

Here's a hint: The next time you get a hankering to go out on the town, instead of visiting honky-tonk and tube-top bars where booze and willing women are in abundance (none of which you seem not able to handle, by the way), why not visit a hospital and sign autographs for sick kids? Or get yourself to a place like the Brownson House in Washington and teach some of what you know. Just the good stuff, please. You can change lives, including your own.

There are no more stops in Pittsburgh for the celebrity train that you have been riding. You simply have to grow up.
