The best of the worst

I'm thinking of putting together a running poll that nobody would want to win, that of the most despicable person in America. You know, the person that we'd all love to hate even more than credit card companies that raise interest rates to near shylock status for no reason other than they can get away with it.

My list of nominees so far includes the parents behind the "Balloon Boy" hoax; radio gabber Rush Limbaugh for blaming "Obama's America" for his being excluded from a minor financial interest in an NFL team; dog fighter/quarterback Michael Vick; and that guy, whoever he is, who invented the scurrilous co-pay that is tacked on to our already crippling health-care costs.

Although I have no respect for the hoaxer parents for trying to parlay what they did into a really dumb TV reality show, or for that matter loudmouth Limbaugh, I'm a dog lover, so Vick is high on my list. However, right now I'm thinking the co-pay guy tops my list, although the health insurance industry loves him like a puppy. Sick 'em, Vick.

A reminder that Pittsburgh Steelers place-kicker Jeff Reed and nose tackle Chris Hoke will be at Washington Crown Center at 6 p.m. Tuesday to, quite literally, kick off the annual 2000 Turkeys fundraising drive. Everyone is welcome.

The meet and greet and photograph and autograph sessions will help the turkey drive to raise money for the Greater Washington County Food Bank and its neighborhood food pantries. More than 3,300 families now receive monthly food assistance. With Thanksgiving rapidly approaching, 2000 Turkeys has accepted the challenge to put a turkey dinner on the Thanksgiving Day table for the roughly 18,300 men, women and children in those families in need.

Your support is encouraged. Send your donation to: 2000 Turkeys, P.O. Box 2000, Washington, PA 15301. Make checks payable to 2000 Turkeys.
